Captain Power

Tom started shaking as soon as he closed the door of Silver’s townhouse. He sank back against the door and gasped for breath. Feeling the tears start to come, Tom used his telekinetic power to lift himself into the air and out of River City.

Tom had learned to ski at Hunter when he was 10. It was probably the only athletic thing he had been good at back then, six months younger and ten pounds lighter than most kids in his class. He liked to stand at the top of the slope and just look out over the valley before going on a run.

Tom landed on the top of the mountain with a crash of snow, eyes blurry with tears. He felt safe here and knew no one would be around, not at this time of night. He could be by himself where no one would ask him about the man he had killed.

Wyatt popped the cap off of his Thermos and filled the cup. “Hot chocolate?” he asked just before Tom leapt ten feet in the air. Wyatt tended to have that sort of effect on people in moments like these. It was one of the few benefits of his ability. In just a few moments, they got past the necessary recounting of how he had gotten there and how he was supposed to be in Egypt. Knowing what was going to happen made life tedious on the whole.

Tom was kind of freaked out by the White King. He seemed to know too much. Tom tried to read his mind, but couldn’t pick anything out from the cacophony. The White King smiled at him while he tried. How could he know?

Wyatt handed over the chart he had swiped from the EMT. Tom shuddered, but a sense of ease came over him as he realized that he hadn’t killed the man. Wyatt hit him in the face with a water balloon.

It’s all about control. Finesse. Just concentrate on being gentle and grabbing the balloon softly. Don’t even think about the water running down your back and freezing. Or how friggin’ cold it is. Just rela—Ok, for the next balloon then, just relax,…

Wyatt moved on to the rabbits once Tom had mastered the water balloons. Tom was a bit unnerved when Wyatt threw a rabbit at him, but he was a motivated student now that he realized how easy it would be for him to kill someone accidentally. The first rabbit would need veterinary surgery, but the others were all fine. Tom was making a lot of progress.

Tom agreed to meet up with Wyatt again periodically. Although he was still creepy, he wasn’t so bad once you got to know him. And he genuinely seemed interested in helping.

Wyatt was happy with their progress. Captain Power won’t kill the Lagomorph now when they meet. Wyatt made plans to meet with him again—Captain Power would need a few gentle nudges in the months to come. Without Wyatt’s guidance, too much damage would be done, too many lives lost, too much escalation to control.
